Veteran politician and former Union Minister Sukhdev Singh Dhindsa was cremated with full state honours today at his native village Ubhawal, in Sangrur district, marking the end of an era in Punjab politics.
Hundreds of mourners from across Punjab gathered to pay their final respects to Dhindsa, who was regarded as one of the most influential political figures in the state for over five decades.
The final rites began with a solemn Ardaas led by former Akal Takht Jathedar Giani Harpreet Singh, followed by the state honour guard as part of the ceremonial tribute.
The funeral was attended by a wide spectrum of political leaders, cutting across party lines. Among those present were Shiromani Akali Dal President Sukhbir Singh Badal, HS Dhami, Manpreet Ayali, Bikram Singh Majithia, and Winnerjit Singh Goldy.
From the ruling AAP government, Punjab Finance Minister Harpal Singh Cheema and Cabinet Minister Aman Arora paid their respects, while the Congress party was represented by senior leaders Kulbir Singh Zira and Brahm Mohindra.
Dhindsa’s legacy as a statesman, administrator, and grassroots leader was fondly remembered by attendees, many of whom called his passing a profound loss for Punjab’s political and social landscape.
