Amritsar (Punjab), June 3, 2025: In a significant move concerning the safety of one of Sikhism’s holiest shrines, Amritsar MP Gurjit Singh Aujla has written to Prime Minister Narendra Modi demanding that Amritsar be declared a "No War Zone".
He has also called for permanent, non-political security arrangements for Sri Harmandir Sahib (Golden Temple). The appeal follows recent alarming reports suggesting that the Pakistani Air Force may have attempted to target Sri Harmandir Sahib.
A high-ranking Indian Army official, a Major General, had recently claimed such an attempt was made—sparking deep concern among Sikhs across India and the global diaspora.
“Sri Harmandir Sahib Is a Symbol of Global Peace”
In his letter, MP Aujla emphasized that Sri Harmandir Sahib is far more than a religious site—it is a spiritual and cultural epicenter for millions of Sikhs around the world. He urged the government to shield the shrine from all political and military threats, reinforcing the sanctity and neutrality of the location.
“Sri Harmandir Sahib is a symbol of world peace. Its security is not only the responsibility of India but of the entire world,” Aujla stated.
He stressed that protecting the shrine is a global responsibility and demanded that its safety should never be subjected to changing political landscapes or national security tensions.
Background: Heightened Concerns Post Military Revelation
The matter escalated after an Indian Army officer publicly revealed that Pakistan had possibly identified Sri Harmandir Sahib as a target. While there is no official confirmation from the Ministry of Defence, the claim has raised red flags in both religious and political circles.
Aujla’s letter seeks to ensure that long-term, apolitical security mechanisms are put in place and that the spiritual site is formally recognized as a demilitarized zone, insulating it from the threat of war or conflict.
