Chandigarh, June 14, 2025 — In the wake of the devastating Samana school bus tragedy, BJP Punjab Mahila Morcha President Jai Inder Kaur has submitted a memorandum to the Punjab Governor, demanding a judicial inquiry and immediate action against what she described as a deep-rooted nexus between the sand mafia and state machinery.
The tragedy, which occurred on May 7, claimed the lives of seven schoolchildren and their van driver from Bhupindra International School.
The school van was crushed by an overloaded, blacklisted tipper truck, allegedly driven by a 19-year-old with a learner’s license, on the dangerously narrow and neglected Samana road.
Calling the incident a “result of sheer administrative negligence and political shielding of criminal networks,” Jai Inder Kaur lashed out at the Patiala district administration and local police, accusing them of failing to prevent the tragedy and abandoning the victims’ families.
She noted that Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann met the grieving families only after massive public outcry, and the government's response remained largely symbolic.
“This is not just a road accident — it is the result of unregulated sand mining, lawless trucking operations, and administrative apathy,” she said.
The memorandum demands:
- A time-bound judicial probe into the tragedy
- Strict accountability and punishment for those responsible
- Dismantling of the sand mafia nexus
- Full compensation and support for the victims’ families
- Stricter transport and road safety reforms to protect schoolchildren
“This tragedy has shaken the conscience of every parent in Punjab,” Jai Inder Kaur stated, adding, “We will not let this be brushed under the carpet. We demand justice — not just for the lives lost, but for the safety of every child in the state.”
