MP Tewari Voices Concern Over Removal of Key Subjects from Chandigarh Colleges, Flags Possible Private Interests
Chandigarh, July 24, 2025 —
Manish Tewari, Member of Parliament from Chandigarh and former Union Minister, has expressed serious concern over the discontinuation of several important academic subjects in the city’s colleges. He warned that this move could ultimately lead to the complete elimination of these disciplines in the near future.
Tewari suspects that the decision is a calculated attempt by the administration to benefit private interests within the education sector at the expense of public institutions.
Highlighting the impact on students, he said a large number of Chandigarh’s youth pursue diverse academic programs that are crucial for their career development. However, recent reports indicate the gradual phasing out of vital courses including M.Sc. Chemistry and IT, M.A. Sociology and Public Administration, BCA, PGDCA (which the Prime Minister himself has emphasized as key for the nation’s future), M.P.Ed., and B.A. Mathematics.
Tewari criticized the administration for taking these steps without consulting subject experts or academicians, calling it a serious lapse.
He declared his intention to raise the matter in Parliament, alleging that it reflects a strategy to promote privatization in education to the detriment of public colleges in Chandigarh.
The MP warned that this move will not only harm thousands of students but also lead to widespread job losses among faculty members teaching these subjects.
