Chandigarh, September 8, 2025: In a landmark decision to support farmers devastated by recent floods, the Punjab Cabinet led by CM Bhagwant Mann has approved the ‘Jisda Khet, Ohdi Ret’ scheme, giving farmers the right to lift and even sell the sand and silt deposited in their fields due to overflowing rivers.
The move comes after widespread damage to agricultural land, where thick layers of sand and soil made cultivation impossible. Now, farmers will not only be allowed to clear their fields but can also earn by selling the deposited soil, turning a disaster into an opportunity.
Alongside this, the government has announced compensation of ₹20,000 per acre for crop damage—a package it claims to be the highest-ever compensation in the country.
Officials said this dual strategy of financial aid and desilting permission aims to provide immediate relief to farmers while restoring agricultural productivity across Punjab.
