Fromer CPS and two-time MLA Sukhpal Singh Nannu Returns to SAD fold
Ferozepur, October 12, 2025: Sukhpal Singh Nannu, a former Chief Parliamentary Secretary and two-time MLA from Ferozepur Urban, made a significant political shift by joining the Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) during a rally in Tarn Taran. SAD president Sukhbir Singh Badal welcomed Nannu into the party, hailing his induction as a significant blow to the ruling Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) in a post on social media.
Nannu, who previously left the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) to join AAP on May 21, 2024, expressed disappointment with his experience in AAP. He revealed that his expectations of playing an active role in the party had not been met. “Despite my extensive experience, AAP gave me no responsibilities, neither locally nor at the state level. I was never invited to or informed about party events,” Nannu said, highlighting his frustration with AAP’s leadership. He further criticised the party for its contradictory actions, stating, “Their words and actions don’t align.”
Nannu also praised SAD president Sukhbir Singh Badal for his proactive leadership during the recent floods in the region. “Sukhbir Badal reached out to people in distress, listened to their concerns, and worked to address them. I share the same commitment to serving people directly, which is why I chose to join SAD,” he explained. Nannu emphasized his long-standing connection with the SAD, recalling fond memories of the late Parkash Singh Badal, who treated him like a son, and Sukhbir, who regarded him as a brother. He described SAD as a true Punjab-centric party, distinct from those controlled by Delhi.
Nannu’s political journey has been marked by shifts. After being denied a ticket by the BJP for the 2022 Assembly elections, he briefly resigned but was persuaded to stay before ultimately joining AAP in 2024. As a BJP candidate, Nannu secured victories in Ferozepur Urban in 2002 and 2007 but faced defeats in 2012 and 2017, which he attributed to internal betrayals within the BJP.
Nannu’s family has a deep political legacy in Ferozepur. His father, Girdhara Singh, won the constituency three times—in 1967 as a Congress candidate, and in 1977 and 1997 as a BJP candidate after switching allegiance to the Bharatiya Jan Sangh in the presence of former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee.
