Chandigarh, April 26, 2026: Sunil Jakhar, president of the Punjab unit of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), has alleged irregularities in the procurement of old gunny bags by the state government and demanded a detailed investigation into the matter.
In a letter addressed to Union Food Supply Minister Prahlad Joshi, Jakhar raised concerns that used gunny bags, reportedly available in the open market at around ₹22 each, were allegedly procured by the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP)-led Punjab government at nearly ₹43.89 per bag.
He said the procurement, carried out under the Decentralized Procurement Scheme (DCP) for wheat storage, raises serious questions about possible corruption and inflated pricing. Jakhar alleged that the significant price difference points toward potential commission practices and misuse of public funds.
Calling for transparency, he urged the Centre to order a thorough probe to uncover the facts and fix accountability if irregularities are found.
Jakhar also acknowledged the Centre’s decision to relax wheat procurement norms in line with farmers’ demands in Punjab.
