MC POLLS
138 candidates in fray across 33 Wards in Ferozepur
Ferozepur, May 25, 2026: Ferozepur is all set for the Municipal Council elections being held today amid intense political activity and rising tension in the district. A total of 139 candidates are contesting across 33 wards, making the elections crucial for all major political parties ahead of the Punjab Assembly elections next year. Rather, this time poll has turned into prestige battle as Independents has added new twist.
Political observers believe the outcome of the MC polls will significantly impact the political atmosphere and provide an indication of the strength of various parties before the 2027 Assembly elections.
In the electoral battle, the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), Congress, Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD), Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) and Independent candidates have fielded their nominees. Of the 138 candidates, AAP has fielded 27 candidates, Congress 29, BJP 28, SAD 19, BSP 2 candidates, while 33 candidates are contesting as Independents.
The figures indicate that Congress and BJP are actively contesting the civic polls, whereas the SAD appears to be on the back foot by fielding candidates in only 19 wards. BSP has fielded just one candidate.
An interesting feature of this election is the role of Independent candidates. Out of the 34 Independent contestants, 25 candidates have been allotted the common election symbol “Diamond,” reportedly backed by Chandan alias Chandu, while the remaining 9 candidates are contesting on symbols such as Bat, Aeroplane, AC, Almirah, Pen, Jeep, Tractor and Car.
Amid continuously rising political tension, the atmosphere turned heated on Sunday when police detained three supporters of Chandan Chandu for questioning on the basis of information received from their sources. Chandu is reportedly backing 22 Independent out of 33 candidates across the 33 wards. The detained supporters were allegedly accused of possessing illegal weapons and being outsiders.
Following the detentions, angry supporters of Chandan Chandu staged a massive protest outside Police Station City Ferozepur and raised slogans against the police action.
On the other hand, Chandan Chandu alleged that the action was part of a conspiracy by rival groups who were trying to suppress his growing influence in the elections.
With polling scheduled for May 26, all eyes are now on the results to be announced on May 29, which are expected to reflect the real political strength and influence of Independent candidates in the Municipal Council elections.
