Chandigarh, May 29, 2026: In the ongoing counting of Municipal Corporation (MC) elections in Punjab, the ruling Aam Aadmi Party has surged ahead with a commanding lead, establishing a significant gap over rival parties in early trends and declared results.
According to figures released around 12:00 noon, out of a total of 1,977 wards, the Aam Aadmi Party has secured 220 seats, emerging as the leading political force in the state-wide civic polls.
The Indian National Congress is currently in second place with 90 seats, reflecting a mixed performance across urban centres.
In a closely contested race for third position, the Shiromani Akali Dal has won 75 seats, maintaining a presence in key constituencies but trailing behind the top two parties.
The Bharatiya Janata Party has faced a disappointing outcome, securing only 20 seats so far in what appears to be a major setback in urban local body elections.
Notably, independent candidates have made a strong impact this election cycle, collectively winning 89 seats and significantly influencing the overall political arithmetic in several wards.
Counting is still underway, and final results are expected to further clarify the balance of power across Punjab’s municipal bodies.
