Chandigarh, May 30, 2026: Following the Aam Aadmi Party’s (AAP) clear majority in the Municipal Corporation elections, political attention in the city has shifted toward the selection of the next Mayor.
Currently, three names have emerged as frontrunners for the prestigious post: Sukhdev Singh Patwari, Sarabjit Singh Samana, and Dr. Sunny Singh Ahluwalia.
Political circles are abuzz with speculation that Sukhdev Singh Patwari holds a significant advantage in terms of seniority, experience, and public connection.
Elected as a municipal councillor for the fourth time—most recently securing a victory from Ward No. 34.
Patwari has demonstrated consistent grassroots support and popularity among residents.
Observers note that his extensive background in municipal affairs and deep understanding of civic issues make him a formidable candidate.
Beyond his role as a councillor, Patwari has been actively involved in the city's social and cooperative spheres for years.
He served as the Vice Chairman of the Mohali Cooperative Bank for a decade, playing a key role in strengthening local cooperative institutions.
Additionally, he has served as the President of the Mohali Press Club, frequently raising issues related to public welfare and civic development.
Over the years, Patwari has earned a reputation as an approachable and people-centric leader who maintains strong ties across various sections of society.
Also in the mayoral race are Sarabjit Singh Samana, a second-term councillor and son of Mohali MLA Kulwant Singh, and Dr. Sunny Singh Ahluwalia, who is entering the Municipal Corporation for the first time.
While the final decision ultimately rests with the AAP high command, there is growing consensus among party workers and the public that Patwari’s administrative acumen, seniority, and direct citizen engagement make him a natural choice to lead the city's future development.
All eyes are now on the AAP leadership as they prepare to announce who will be entrusted with the responsibility of becoming the First Citizen of Mohali.
