Sri Muktsar Sahib, June 22, 2026:
A meeting of the Child Welfare Committee (CWC), Sri Muktsar Sahib, was held on Monday under the chairmanship of Sarvarinder Singh Dhillon, Chairman, to review measures aimed at safeguarding the rights and welfare of child victims, particularly in cases registered under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act.
Addressing the meeting, Chairman Sarvarinder Singh Dhillon highlighted that the Child Welfare Committee functions as the primary guardian of child victims under the provisions of the Juvenile Justice (Care and Protection of Children) Act. He emphasized that the Committee plays a crucial role in ensuring the immediate safety, psychological recovery, care, protection, and long-term rehabilitation of children who are victims of abuse, exploitation, or neglect.
He informed that whenever a child is rescued or identified as being in need of care and protection, the child is produced before the Child Welfare Committee within 24 hours. The Committee then assesses the circumstances of the case and determines the most suitable and secure living arrangement for the child. Depending on the situation, the child may be restored to trustworthy parents or guardians, placed with a fit person, or transferred to a registered Child Care Institution for protection and support.
Chairman Dhillon further stated that the Committee ensures immediate access to essential services, including medical examinations, trauma counselling, psychological support, and emotional therapy, to help child victims recover from distressing experiences. The Committee closely monitors the delivery of these services and works in coordination with various departments and agencies to safeguard the child's well-being.
He added that the Child Welfare Committee also keeps track of the progress of police investigations and other legal proceedings to ensure that the rights and interests of child victims are protected throughout the judicial process. The Committee remains committed to providing a child-friendly environment and ensuring that every child receives the care, support, and rehabilitation necessary for a secure future.
The meeting concluded with a reaffirmation of the Committee’s commitment to strengthening child protection mechanisms and ensuring timely intervention for children in need of care and protection in the district.
