Patiala, August 6, 2026: The Punjab Government’s scheme providing 300 units of free electricity per month to domestic consumers has brought substantial financial relief to nearly 90 percent of the State’s around one crore electricity consumers.
The scheme has significantly reduced the burden of electricity bills on ordinary, middle-class, economically weaker and underprivileged households. By lowering their monthly electricity expenditure, it has provided direct financial benefits and improved household savings.
Today, lakhs of families across Punjab are benefiting from free electricity provided by the State Government. The money that would otherwise have been spent on electricity bills is now being utilised by many families for their children's education, healthcare, household necessities and other essential expenses.
The scheme has also produced another significant positive outcome by promoting greater awareness about the efficient and responsible use of electricity. A large number of consumers are now consciously trying to keep their monthly electricity consumption within the 300-unit limit. Many households have adopted energy-saving practices such as switching off unnecessary electrical appliances, increasing the use of LED bulbs and other energy-efficient appliances, and using high-consumption equipment such as air conditioners and heaters more judiciously.
These efforts have directly benefited households that have successfully maintained their monthly electricity consumption within 300 units, enabling them to save significantly on electricity bills. As a result of this welfare initiative, nearly 90 percent of electricity consumers in Punjab have been relieved of the financial burden of paying electricity bills.
