Chandigarh, August 15, 2026: Tension escalated at the Chandigarh-Mohali border on Saturday as police used water cannons and tear gas to stop protesters of the Qaumi Insaaf Morcha from advancing towards Chandigarh.
The protesters attempted to remove police barricades and move ahead towards Chandigarh, following which police used water cannons and fired tear gas shells to disperse them.
Some protesters also reportedly tried to remove barricades placed behind tractors. Despite repeated appeals by the police to move back, the protesters remained determined to proceed towards Chandigarh.
A large number of police personnel and administrative officials have been deployed at the spot to maintain law and order. There were also claims that some young protesters were carrying weapons, although this could not be independently verified.
Police continued to use water cannons and tear gas as the situation remained tense at the border. Information also emerged that tear gas shells were being deployed using drones as authorities attempted to prevent the protesters from moving further towards Chandigarh.
