High Court Bar Association Strongly Condemns Punjab Govt’s Opposition to Chief Justice Appointment
It described the move as Executive interference in matters concerning judicial independence and the dignity of the judiciary.

Chandigarh, September 6, 2026: The Punjab & Haryana High Court Bar Association has strongly and unequivocally condemned the Punjab Government’s reported opposition to the appointment of Justice Ashwani Kumar Mishra as Chief Justice of the Punjab & Haryana High Court.
In a statement issued after an emergent meeting of its Executive Committee under President Rohit Sud, the Bar Association expressed serious concern over what it described as Executive interference in matters concerning judicial independence and the dignity of the judiciary.
The Association said the appointment of High Court judges and Chief Justices is governed by the constitutional framework and the law laid down by the Supreme Court. It maintained that once an appointment is made through the constitutional process, political disagreement should not be allowed to undermine the authority, dignity or institutional independence of the judiciary.
The Bar Association also objected to the reported convening of a special Punjab Cabinet meeting to deliberate on the Chief Justice’s appointment, terming it a matter of serious concern and warning against any perception of political or Executive pressure on the judiciary.
It urged the Punjab Government to respect the constitutional process, uphold the principle of separation of powers and preserve the dignity and sanctity of the Punjab & Haryana High Court.
The Association further called upon the legal fraternity to remain vigilant and united in defending judicial independence, saying that an independent judiciary is a constitutional safeguard for every citizen. It reaffirmed its support for the Judiciary and commitment to the smooth, effective and fearless functioning of the justice delivery system.
