OCI Cardholders Can Travel to and from India While Passport Details Are Being Updated: Indian Consulate Clarifies
VANCOUVER, October 15, 2026: The Consulate General of India in Vancouver has clarified that Overseas Citizen of India (OCI) cardholders will face no restrictions on travelling to or from India while their passport details are being updated in the online system.
In a public notice dated October 14, 2026, the Consulate addressed concerns regarding international travel during the passport updation process and outlined the requirements for OCI cardholders receiving new passports.
Passport Details Must Be Updated After Every New Passport
According to the notice, all OCI cardholders must update their passport details in their OCI card records, including e-OCI card registration, every time a new passport is issued. This requirement applies irrespective of the cardholder’s age.
The update must be completed within three months of the issuance of the new passport.
The Consulate has clarified that OCI cardholders will not face any restrictions on travelling to or from India from the date they submit their passport updation application until the final acknowledgement of their documents is recorded in the online system.
The clarification is expected to provide reassurance to OCI cardholders who need to travel internationally while their passport details are being updated.
The Consulate General of India in Vancouver has advised prospective applicants to take note of the clarification. For further information or queries, applicants can contact the Consulate at: Email: oci.vancouver@mea.gov.in
The public notice reiterates the requirement to update passport details following the issuance of a new passport while clarifying that the updation process itself will not restrict OCI cardholders from travelling to or from India.
