Chandigarh, October 15, 2026: Chandigarh Power Distribution Limited (CPDL) detected electricity theft during an enforcement drive at Shastri Nagar, Manimajra, where e-rickshaws were found being charged using an illegal power connection.
CPDL officials said that 20 e-rickshaws were charged illegally drawing a combined electrical load of around 30 kilowatts (kW). The consumer had a registered electricity connection but was using electricity by theft.
During the inspection it was found that the consumer had tapped from CPDL’s low-voltage (LV) mains to draw electricity directly for charging the e-rickshaws, bypassing the authorised electricity supply system. Such theft is also a potential safety threat.
CPDL officials said that enforcement teams are analysing the consumption of e-rickshaw charging stations across the city, to verify whether their consumption is as per the sanctioned load or not.
CPDL has reiterated its commitment to curbing electricity theft. "We will continue conducting regular enforcement drives across the city to detect such violations and safeguard the electricity distribution network”, said an official.
CPDL has also urged consumers to refrain from unauthorised electricity connections and use electricity only through authorised connections.
