Mansa, October 15, 2026: Anger has spread across Punjab following the sensational murder of social activist Parvinder Singh Jhota in Mansa. Punjab observed a statewide shutdown today in protest against the killing. At a press conference, Jhota’s family and the Action Committee expressed their outrage over the handling of the case by the police and administration.
The family demanded that a statue of Parvinder Singh Jhota be installed at the site of the shop belonging to the accused, Ashwani Kumar, and that Jhota be officially accorded martyr status. Family members alleged that drugs were being sold in the area with the alleged backing of the police. However, Jhota’s father clarified that he had not supported the statewide shutdown, adding that public anger had spilled onto the streets because of the prevailing circumstances.
Mansa SSP Announces Action Against Police Officials
Following the press conference, Mansa Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Vaibhav Chaudhary addressed the media and clarified the police department’s position on the case.
The SSP said that the police had acted promptly and arrested the main accused within two days of the incident. He also confirmed that SHO Beant Kaur had been suspended with immediate effect after concerns regarding negligence and her alleged role came to light.
Chaudhary assured the public that departmental action would be taken against any other police personnel or officers if their involvement in the case was established during the investigation.
Initial Probe Points to Drug Supply from Mohali
Revealing details about the suspected drug supply network, the SSP said the preliminary investigation had indicated that the drugs were being supplied from the Mohali side.
He said the police were examining all technical and other crucial aspects of the case to dismantle the entire network. The investigation is focused on identifying those involved in the supply chain and establishing the links between the individuals connected to the alleged drug trade.
Providing details of the district-wide anti-drug campaign, the SSP claimed that 453 cases had been registered under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act during the past month, and more than 540 alleged drug traffickers had been arrested.
In addition, more than 138 cases had reportedly been registered against chemist shops as part of efforts to curb drug-related activities and eliminate the menace of drugs from the district.
Senior Officers in Touch with Action Committee
Addressing the ongoing discussions between the administration and the victim’s family, the SSP said senior police officials, including the Deputy Inspector General (DIG) and Special Director General of Police (Special DGP), were present at the spot and were maintaining continuous communication with the Action Committee.
He said the administration’s immediate priorities were to maintain law and order, prevent any untoward incidents and ensure that those responsible for the crime faced strict legal consequences.
More than 3,000 police personnel have reportedly been deployed across the city as part of extensive security arrangements to maintain peace and prevent further unrest.
The administration has appealed to residents and members of the business community to remain calm, maintain peace and cooperate with the authorities.
The family and protesters continue to seek justice for Parvinder Singh Jhota, while the police have assured them that the investigation will proceed and action will be taken against anyone found involved in the case.
The key demands of the family include a statue of Jhota at the accused’s shop site, official recognition as a martyr, and accountability for any police officials found responsible for negligence or involvement.
