21st Quinquennial Livestock Census Launched in UT Chandigarh

The Department of Animal Husbandry & Fisheries Chandigarh started 21st Quinquennial Livestock Census campaign today. Sh. Rajeev Verma, Adviser to Administrator, Chandigarh Administration launched 21st Livestock Census Operation on 7th November, 2024 in UT Chandigarh. The Animal Husbandry & Fisheries Department UT Chandigarh is Nodal agency for conducting Livestock Census in the entire area of UT Chandigarh.
The census will cover 100% households, enterprises and institutions etc. under the able guidance of Hari Kallikkat, Secretary, Animal Husbandry & Fisheries UT Chandigarh. The data for 21 Livestock Censes shall be collected digitally by the enumerators. The enumerators will visit door to door in the area allotted to them for collection of data. Therefore, cooperation of each household, non household enterprise etc. is required. The Government of India, Ministry of Fisheries, Animal Husbandry & Dairying, Department of Animal Husbandry & Dairying (AHS Division), has launched 21st Livestock Census App on 25th October, 2024. This process shall be completed by February, 2025.
Livestock Census is of great importance to tabulate the population of livestock/poultry in the region so as to formulate and implement different beneficiary schemes for livestock farmers by Govt. of India from time to time. During the Census, extensive field survey will be conducted where enumerators will visit each and every household/non household/enterprise/institution to record number of animals according to their breeds and other characteristics. This includes domestic animals, data of stray cattle and dogs, poultry, small animals and agriculture equipments as per schedules of Govt. of India.
The last Livestock Censes was conducted in 2019. The last Census had recorded 25617 Bovines population (13440 Cows and 12177 Buffaloes). The population of Pet and Stray Dogs were 11006 and 12922 respectively.
Department of Animal Husbandry & Fisheries, UT Chandigarh appeals to the General Public specially Resident Welfare Association and local councillors to extend full cooperation and support to the enumerators who visit their area for data collection for successful conduction of Livestock Census.
