After PU, ABVP wins three of four DUSU posts; Nitin Nabin hails victory

New Delhi, September 19, 2026: After retaining the presidency at Panjab University, the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) has won three of the four key posts in the Delhi University Students’ Union (DUSU) elections, with Yash Dabas elected President, Riya Chhawdi Secretary and Lakshya Raj Singh Joint Secretary. Independent candidate Deepanshu Shokeen won the Vice-President post.
The DUSU results come less than three weeks after ABVP candidate Ankit Bidhan retained the Panjab University Campus Students’ Council (PUCSC) presidency, marking the organisation’s second consecutive win for the top post at Panjab University. The PU election, held on August 29, saw ABVP secure the presidency while other major posts went to candidates backed by different student groups.
In Delhi, Dabas secured 24,576 votes to defeat National Students’ Union of India (NSUI) candidate Vijay Shankar Meena, who polled 22,523 votes. Chhawdi won the Secretary post with 21,650 votes, while Lakshya Raj Singh secured the Joint Secretary position with 16,615 votes.
Shokeen won the Vice-President post with 30,615 votes, defeating ABVP’s Ishu Maurya and NSUI’s Virr Chatrath. With the result, ABVP secured three of the four central DUSU posts, while an independent candidate bagged the remaining seat.
The results were declared on Saturday after 20 rounds of counting at the Multipurpose Hall of the University Sports Stadium in Delhi University’s North Campus. Polling had been held on September 18 across 52 polling centres, recording a voter turnout of 40.46 per cent, the highest in three years, according to election reports.
The back-to-back results at Panjab University and Delhi University have put ABVP’s performance in student politics in focus. Reports on the Panjab University election noted that the result strengthened ABVP’s presence on a campus where regional and Congress-backed student organisations have traditionally been influential, although the PU result itself was divided across different student groups.
Reacting to the DUSU results, Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) National President Nitin Nabin congratulated ABVP and the newly elected representatives. In a post on X, Nabin said the outcome reflected what he described as the youth’s continued faith in “positive and constructive student politics”.
Nabin also referred to a “Nation First” approach and the vision of a “Viksit Bharat” while extending his best wishes to the winning candidates and those who worked for their campaigns.
Following his election, DUSU President-elect Yash Dabas said safety audits of paying guest (PG) accommodations, hostels and colleges would be among his immediate priorities. The issue has gained attention following the recent Satya Niketan building collapse in Delhi.
Outgoing DUSU President and ABVP leader Aryan Maan also highlighted hostel availability, action against what he called the “PG mafia” and the need for a Rent Control Act in Delhi University. He said an ABVP delegation had earlier met the Delhi Chief Minister and sought additional hostels on the university campus.
The DUSU campaign focused on issues including student safety, accommodation, hostel facilities, campus infrastructure, academic facilities and social justice.
The latest DUSU result follows ABVP’s victory at Panjab University, making the two major university elections notable developments in the student politics landscape ahead of the 2027 Punjab Assembly elections. The two campuses, however, have different electoral structures and student-group dynamics, and their results cannot be treated as directly comparable.
