Chandigarh, April 28, 2026: The Punjab government, led by Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann, has convened a special session of the Punjab Vidhan Sabha on May 1 following recent political developments involving defections of Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) Rajya Sabha members.
According to sources, the session is expected to focus on countering the alleged “Operation Lotus,” with the government likely to introduce a condemnation resolution against the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) over claims of attempts to poach elected representatives.
The move comes in the wake of reports that seven AAP Rajya Sabha MPs have joined the BJP, triggering a political storm. The ruling party has accused the BJP of undermining democracy by allegedly using inducements and pressure tactics to engineer defections and destabilise elected governments.
The Mann government is expected to use the special session to demonstrate unity and political strength amid the crisis. The proceedings are likely to witness heated exchanges, with the ruling party targeting the BJP over the “Operation Lotus” allegations.
At the same time, opposition parties are expected to question the AAP government over internal rifts and the circumstances that led to the defections.
The May 1 session is anticipated to be politically charged, with both sides gearing up for a sharp confrontation on the floor of the House.
