Chandigarh University celebrates National Sports Day with energizing Walkathon and Zumba
Over 1500 Students Participate in Chandigarh University’s Walkathon and Zumba on National Sports Day Eve

Mohali, August 28, 2024: To promote the significance of sports and physical activity in the country, Chandigarh University on Wednesday organised a Walkathon and Zumba class at the university campus Gharuan on the eve of National Sports Day.
More than 1500 students, male and female, participated in the 3.5-kilometre Walkathon early Wednesday morning.
Among the girl students, Seema Yadav triumphed. Lalita Loha finished runner up, while Rakina got the third position in the sports scholarship category (students who have received sports scholarships).
In the non-sports scholarship category, Diya bagged the first prize, Radhika second and Naina Bagri for the third spot in the Walkathon.
Among the boys, the Walkathon winners in the sports scholarship category included Abhijeet Singh who won the first prize. Shivansh pathania and Nikhil Pratap secured the second and third spot respectively in this category.
In the non-sports scholarship category, Tiger Mula who won the first prize. Ansh and Apurv Sharma secured the second and third spot respectively in the Walkathon in this category. The Walkathon winners were felicitated with medal and T-shirts.
As part of the event, Zumba Dance performance was also held for the participants to combine dance and fitness.
Later, students of Bachelor of Physical Education (B.P.Ed) at University Institute of Physical Education and Sports (UIPES), Chandigarh University, visited Maxim Merry School at Kharar and gave lectures on importance of sports for maintaining a balanced and healthy life.
By engaging students in Athletic events, Basketball, Football and recreational games, they appealed the school students to take up sports with their family and friends for a healthy mind and body.
Urging all students to participate in outdoor sports for at least one hour every day, Member of Parliament (Rajya Sabha) and Chancellor of Chandigarh University Satnam Singh Sandhu said besides providing world class education, Chandigarh University gives equal importance to sports as a career and has been honing sporting prowess of budding athletes to transform them into national and international achievers in the field of sports.
“As a result, students from Chandigarh University have been excelling at national and international sports competitions. While five Chandigarh University students represented India at the recently concluded Paris Olympics, three of our students are now participating in the Paris Paralympics 2024 Games beginning today. Before this, 22 players from Chandigarh University represented India at 10th Asian Games. Of these Chandigarh University students, 10 bagged medals including eight gold and two bronze medals in the Asian Games,” he said
The Chancellor said apart from the state-of-the-art sports infrastructure and professional coaches who hone the talent of athletes, Chandigarh University has allocated a budget of Rs 8.5 Crore this year to ensure sports development in the campus. This also includes Major Dhyan Chand Scholarship of Rs 3.84 Crore.”
“Chandigarh University provides modern sports infrastructure and equipment and budding athletes are trained under the watchful eye of professional coaches and experienced trainers. Apart from this, CU also provides financial assistance to sportspersons in the form of monthly scholarships. Currently, 1183 students including 562 girls who have been availing scholarship in CU, out of which 407 students are getting 100% scholarship. These students get free special diet, sports kits, expenses to visit sports competition venues, coaching expenses, hostel and other facilities are all borne by the CU,” Sandhu added.
National Sports Day is celebrated every year on 29th August, to commemorate the birth anniversary of Hockey Legend Major Dhyan Chand.

The theme for National Sports Day 2024 is "Sport for the Promotion and Peaceful and Inclusive Societies." This theme underscores how sports can strengthen social bonds, unite individuals, and empower communities to foster inclusivity and peace.
