Ferozepur, June 2, 2026: In a significant milestone for Punjabi language computing, the Department of Computer Science at Punjabi University, Patiala, has achieved a historic breakthrough with the development of the first Artificial Intelligence-based Punjabi grammar checker.
Ms. Jagdish Kaur, a faculty member at DAV College, Ferozepur, successfully completed her Ph.D. research under the supervision of noted computer scientist and academician Dr. C. P. Kamboj. As part of her research, she developed “Sudharak,” the first AI-powered Punjabi grammar correction software based on Machine Intelligence and Deep Learning technologies.
While advanced grammar-checking tools have long been available for major international languages, Punjabi lacked a deep learning-based solution. Existing systems were largely rule-based or statistical in nature and had limited ability to detect complex grammatical errors. To overcome this challenge, the researcher fine-tuned the MT5 Transformer Model to create an advanced system capable of understanding and correcting complex linguistic patterns in Punjabi.
“Sudharak” can identify and correct grammatical errors at the sentence level and spelling mistakes at the word level. The software is capable of handling errors related to auxiliary and main verbs, pronouns, conjunctions, adjective-noun agreement, word order, and other grammatical structures. It also incorporates a deep learning-based spell checker and a specialized post-processing mechanism that corrects gender-number agreement and subject-verb agreement while explaining the reasons for the corrections. Additionally, it can rectify common Punjabi typing errors involving addhak, tippi, nukta, halant, and other diacritical marks.
According to the researchers, the AI model demonstrates significantly higher accuracy than traditional rule-based systems and delivers performance comparable to modern AI platforms such as ChatGPT and Gemini. Alongside the grammar checker, Jagdish Kaur also developed a Text Cleaning Tool and an Error Injection Tool, which are expected to serve as valuable resources for future Punjabi language researchers.
Speaking on the occasion, Dr. C. P. Kamboj said that the research has the potential to revolutionize language-learning software, automated writing assistance, and educational assessment systems. Vice-Chancellor Dr. Jagdeep Singh and faculty members of Punjabi University congratulated Dr. Kamboj and Jagdish Kaur on this remarkable scientific achievement and their contribution to the advancement of Punjabi language technology.
