Health Dept’s efforts cut maternal deaths in Ferozepur
Ferozepur, July 14, 2025: Thanks to the continuous efforts of the Ferozepur district administration and health department, the maternal mortality rate during childbirth has significantly declined in recent months. Deputy Commissioner Dipshikha Sharma shared this during a review meeting with Civil Surgeon Dr. Rajwinder Kaur and other health officials.
Highlighting the improvements, the DC said the number of maternal deaths, which was alarmingly high in 2024-25 with 440 cases, has now reduced drastically, with almost zero deaths recorded in the past five months. The Maternal Mortality Rate (MMR) has come down to 55.5 in 2025.
Key initiatives included regular meetings with frontline workers and doctors, tracking high-risk pregnancies via WhatsApp groups, and addressing deficiencies in the healthcare system. As a result, Ferozepur district has been awarded Rs 5 crore by NITI Aayog for its outstanding health services, with Rs 1 crore allocated under Project Janam Shakti. This will further strengthen maternal and child healthcare in collaboration with US-based NGO JHPIEGO, a non-profit global health organisation affiliated with Johns Hopkins University, over the next 18 months, with special focus on developing and implementing transformative healthcare solutions in developing countries.
