Homi Bhabha Cancer Conclave 2024 Concludes with Pioneering Insights, Educational Excellence and Collaborative Vision

The highly anticipated Homi Bhabha Cancer Conclave 2024, a two-day academic event dedicated to advancing cancer care and research, successfully concluded in Chandigarh. This inaugural conclave brought together leading experts, scientists, and healthcare professionals for critical discussions and the exchange of innovative ideas in the field of oncology.
The first day of the conclave featured a comprehensive agenda, including pre-conference workshops, scientific programs, and academic sessions. Key topics covered included enhancing cancer care standards in North India, evidence-based management of Thoracic Cancer, advancements in Breast Oncology, Gynecological Oncology, Lung Oncology, Hemato-Oncology, Pediatric Oncology, Bone and Soft Tissue Oncology, as well as the latest research in Hematolymphoid Malignancies.
On the second day, the focus shifted to Head and Neck Cancers, Gastrointestinal Oncology, Uro-Oncology, and the challenges faced in the field of Oncology. A special session was dedicated to 'Kevat,' a patient navigation program in oncology initiated by the Tata Memorial Centre, highlighting its critical role in cancer care.
The conclave was graced by distinguished speakers, including Dr. Ajit Kumar Mohanty, Secretary, the Department of Atomic Energy and Chairman of the Atomic Energy Commission; Dr. Sudeep Gupta, Director of TMC; Dr. Ashish Gulia, Director of Homi Bhabha Cancer Hospital and Research Centre (HBCH&RC), New Chandigarh; and Dr. Vivek Lal, Director of Postgraduate Institute of Medical Education and Research, Chandigarh.
During the event, DAE Secretary Dr. Ajit Kumar Mohanty inaugurated a coffee table book and announced a newly developed patient mobile application aimed at improving patient information accessibility. The app, which will soon be available to patients, is a significant step forward in enhancing patient engagement and care.
In his address, Dr. Ajit Kumar Mohanty reflected on India's rich legacy of medical knowledge, citing the contributions of historical figures like Sushruta and Charaka. He also acknowledged the achievements of TMC and its centers, as well as the enduring impact of Homi Jehangir Bhabha's scientific contributions.
"Atoms are in the service of the nation," Dr. Mohanty remarked, highlighting the significant milestones achieved in cancer care and research.
Dr. Vivek Lal served as the Guest of Honour for the ceremony, where he eloquently described the legacy of the Tata Memorial Centre and praised its significant contributions for raising the standards of cancer care in India. He warmly welcomed HBCH&RC, Chandigarh, and assured the support of PGI, Chandigarh.
Dr. Sudeep Gupta emphasized the importance of the hub-and-spoke model advocated by TMC Punjab, designed to enhance cancer care across neighboring states.
"We are confident that our hospitals in Sangrur and New Chandigarh will become premier cancer treatment centers in India, ensuring that patients no longer need to travel vast distances for quality care," said Dr. Gupta.
Dr. Ashish Gulia, Director, HBCH&RC, extended a warm welcome to the esteemed dignitaries and underscored the importance of collaborative efforts in the fight against cancer. He expressed his gratitude to academic institutions such as PGI Chandigarh, GMSH Chandigarh, and AIMS Mohali for their guidance and collaboration, and thanked the administrations of Punjab and Chandigarh for their continued support.
Dr. Homi Jehangir Bhabha Oration was delivered by Padma Shri Dr. R.A. Badwe, who shared his journey and provided detailed insights on policy-making to combat the challenges posed by cancer in our society.
The first Plenary Lecture Vasant Ramji Khanolkar was delivered by Padma Shri Dr. Ravi Kannan, Director, Cachar Cancer Hospital and Research Centre, Silchar, Assam. He shared inspiring stories of his efforts to bring affordable cancer treatment to some of the most remote parts of the northeastern region.
Over 550 faculty members and delegates from across India participated and contributed to this enriching academic event.
HBCH&RC also organized a ‘Walkathon for Cancer Awareness and Prevention’ at Sukhna Lake, honored by the presence of the chief guest, Vinay Pratap Singh, IAS, Deputy Commissioner of Chandigarh Administration.
