Chandigarh, July 1, 2024:
PGI administration has made a U-turn on the use of vernacular language (only Hindi) following Punjabi leaders' condemnation. On June 4, PGI Director Vivek Lal issued an order for all staff members to use only Hindi wherever possible. But days after the letter went viral, the Punjabi-speaking population opposed it and many leaders had condemned this move of PGI administration.
Now, the PGI has amended its earlier letter and ordered the use of Punjabi as well.
Notably, in his new letter dated June 26, PGI Director Vivek Lal said, “I had requested you on 04.06.2024, through my semi-official letter to write OPD/IPD slips/cards etc. in Hindi as per the convenience of the patients and to make every possible effort to give them instructions or directions in Hindi, to prepare videos in Hindi on topics related to common diseases and their treatment/prevention to make the society aware.”
He added, “Making amendments in this regard, I request you to continue using both the common languages Hindi and Punjabi instead of Hindi as per the convenience of the patients.”
Recently, Punjabi Sahit Academy Ludhiana had also condemned the move of the PGI administration.
