Jammu, July 3, 2024: At the 56th session of the UN Human Rights Council at the broken chair square outside the Palais De Nations, Geneva, India Water Foundation organised an exhibition on “Improvement in living index from human rights perspective through emerging technologies in Jammu and Kashmir". We highlight how new and emerging technologies like Artificial Intelligence and big data analytics are helping governments and other stakeholders make effective policies and decisions by identifying and mitigating any pre-existing bias. This improves procedural fairness and equal treatment. AI and data analytics can help identify patterns of bias in communities based on factors such as race, age, and gender. Collecting and disaggregating data more easily—using these technologies—can help establish fair service delivery for all the people within a community.
Also Dr. Asma Shora from India Water Foundation made an in person oral statement during the INTERACTIVE DIALOGUE ON OHCHR REPORT ON HUMAN RIGHTS AND NEW AND EMERGING DIGITAL TECHNOLOGIES, INCLUDING ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE on 2nd July 2024
She highlighted how like every other technology, AI has a downside. But when used responsibly, it also has the potential to do tremendous good to humanity. India’s AI approach is inherently inclusive and focuses on social good and aligns with the UN SDGs. Be it our multilingual natural language platform – “Bhashini'', providing inclusion for about 22 Indian regional languages, or the “Drone Didi” project, training rural women of India to become Drone pilots.
She further articulated that how she spearheaded the AI – powered “Return to Work” program for women with career gaps, due to marriage, maternity, etc.
This is a public – private partnered project and is powered by Generative AI tools, providing career assistance, such as skill assessment, job match making, resume and LinkedIn profile generation, helping women find decent work after having career breaks.
India sees emerging technologies like AI as an enabler to harness her demographic strengths, a quicker and efficient way of working towards achieving the UN – SDGs.
