Protest erupts over Sarpanch Jashan Bawa's Suicide; MLA Sarari dismisses political conspiracy
Ferozepur, June 9, 2025: The tragic suicide of village sarpanch Jashan Bawa in Guru Har Sahai’s Tarinda village has snowballed into a major political and social storm. While the family and various groups are staging large-scale protests outside the Lakho Ke Behram police station demanding legal action against AAP MLA Fauja Singh Sarari and his PA, political parties like the Shiromani Akali Dal, Congress, and BJP have seized the moment to corner the government.
Jashan Bawa, known for his friendly nature and social work, allegedly shot himself in his native village Tarida under Guru Har Sahai sub-division on June 1. Earlier, he had posted a melancholic poem on his Facebook page, which has intensified the grief and suspicion among his supporters.
Jaswinder Singh, President of Sarpanch Union Punjab, and farmer leader Avtar Singh Mehima, stated that Jashan Bawa was under constant pressure and harassment, allegedly extorted for money and prevented from fulfilling his duties as sarpanch—driving him to end his life.
Former Congress MLA Raminder Awla, who also joined the protest, voiced his support for the grieving family and demanded justice, warning the government of continued agitation if their demands aren’t met.
Meanwhile, MLA Fouja Singh Sarari released a statement on social media, denying any involvement and accusing “mischievous elements” of manipulating the family for political gain. He expressed confidence that the truth will prevail, promising a fitting response to those playing politics and plotting conspiracies around the case. Sarari assured that the police have formed a Special Investigation Team (SIT) to probe the matter thoroughly and bring out the truth in black and white.
Meanwhile, the police urged Jashan Bawa’s family to come forward and record their statements so that further legal action can be initiated.
As the protests persist, the groups warned that the struggle will only intensify if justice isn’t served and action against the accused isn’t taken, squarely holding the government responsible for any escalation.
