Chandigarh, June 7, 2026: A delegation of Sikh representatives has met the Governor of Punjab and urged him to facilitate dialogue with the Government of India on a range of long-pending issues concerning the Sikh community and Punjab.
In a statement issued after the meeting, the delegation said it held detailed discussions with the Governor on concerns that it believes require attention within the constitutional framework of India. The representatives requested the Governor to endorse their memorandum and take up the matter with the Centre.
The delegation noted that the Sikh community played a significant role in India's freedom struggle and has continued to contribute to national security, particularly in border regions. However, it maintained that several issues affecting the community have remained unresolved over the years.
According to the statement, a representation outlining 12 key issues was submitted to the Union Home Ministry on May 15, 2026, carrying the signatures of 10 Sikh community representatives. The delegation subsequently sought an appointment with the Punjab Governor, who met them on June 5.
Members of the delegation described the meeting as "fruitful" and expressed hope that the Government of India would respond positively and initiate constructive discussions on the matters raised.
As part of the outreach process, the group has also announced plans to convene a Panthic meeting of Sikh representatives on June 29, 2026, at Kendriya Singh Sabha, Sector 28, Chandigarh. The gathering is expected to discuss issues concerning the Sikh community and formulate a collective approach for engagement with the Centre.
The delegation clarified that it is acting only as an initiator of the proposed dialogue process and that the 12 issues listed in its memorandum should not be viewed as an exhaustive list. It said additional concerns could be incorporated based on wider consultations within the Sikh community.
The representatives also invited suggestions from members of the community as efforts continue to build consensus and create an atmosphere conducive to dialogue between Sikh organisations and the Government of India.
