US President Election: How the Indian diaspora is influencing elections
New Delhi, November 5, 2024: The Indian diaspora, as the second largest immigrant group in the United States, significantly impacts the electoral process. Their perspectives and influence are increasingly acknowledged, contributing to a richer and more diverse political landscape in the country.
Around 5 million in population, the Indian diaspora accounts for 1.35 % of the US population.
With approximately 1.9 million eligible voters, Indian are 2nd largest Asian American ethnic group after Chinese Americans. Indians are 3% of US engineers, 7% of IT workforce, 8% of physicians.
There are already more than 300 South Asian Americans — an umbrella term for those with roots in India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Nepal and other countries in the subcontinent — in elected office across the country.
