Under ‘Chalo Library’ campaign, DSCW hosts 'Brihat-Samhita Book Review Session'
Ferozepur, September 2, 2024: As part of the Punjab Government’s “Chalo Library” campaign, the Dev Samaj College for Women organized a series of book review sessions, under the tutelage of Principal Dr Sangeeta.
On the third day of these sessions, Assistant Professor of Post-Graduate History, Mrs. Ruchi Kakkar, reviewed the ancient Indian astrological text ‘Brihat Samhita’ written by Varahamihira.
Mrs. Kakkar highlighted the book's comprehensive coverage of natural elements, astrology, meteorology, gemology, Vastu Shastra, astronomy, geography, medicine, therapy, fortune-telling, and physiognomy. She emphasized that ‘Brihat Samhita’ provides a clear and detailed analysis of these diverse subjects, remaining relevant and educational even today.
She said that after reading this book one feels that Varahamihir has written about the world. The Samhita has presented the scientific knowledge and comprehensive perspective of its time and its interpretation Pandit Shri Achyutanand Jha has done it. Due to this, this work has maintained a unique place in Indian culture. This entire creation is unique and full of rich knowledge. Reading this book is an enriching experience and a must-read for every Indian scholar.
Principal Dr. Sangeeta thanked Mrs. Ruchi Kakkar for her insightful review, noting the book’s significance in offering new perspectives in astrology and science. She also congratulated Alka Bamba and Dr. Sandhya Awasthi for the successful organization of the event and Chairman Shri Nirmal Singh Dhillon extended his best wishes.
