Chandigarh, September 15, 2024: In a significant development Water Resources Department of Punjab has identified nearly1000 main polluters of water bodies in the state and has asked the DCs to act to check the pollution. The department has compiled an 123 page report (copy of which is with Babushahi ) district wise in which all the names and details have been added .The list includes village Panchayats, Municipal Committees, industries, private business owners and various types of institutions also . Department has asked all Deputy Commissioners to act against polluters as per list.

According to letter no. 1333/CE/DRG/2024 dated 23.08.24, Krishan Kumar,Principal Secretary of Department of Water Resources has asked all Deputy Commissioners that many times untreated water is thrown into rivers and drains which leads to pollution of water bodies. This is violation of not only Water Pollution Act but at the same time is also the violation of the Northern India Canals and Drainage Act 1873.
List has identified cases district wise. DCs have been asked to take appropriate action directing Panchayats, Municipal Committees and other organizations also to not to throw garbage or untreated in water bodies.
Principal Secretary has also said that matter was in the knowledge of National Green Tribunal (NGT) which is monitoring the matter.
The issue of the water pollution had been strongly raised by prominent environmentalist Col. Jasjit Singh Gill through his writings and meeting with the senior officers of the department.Col Gill while appreciating the the step of the department said, " An Opener to the malice in Punjab.Black sheep exposed".
