Post-LS Poll Analysis: After defeat, brainstorming starts for poor polling segments in Ferozepur
Ferozepur, June 7, 2024: With the winning of the Congress candidate during Lok Sabha Constituency-10 elections held on June 1 and results declared on June 4, Sher Singh Ghubaya secured 2,66,626 votes (23%) by 3,242 votes, the other political parties have started brainstorming of poor polling segments in Ferozepur. Out of the total voters of 16,70,008 in the Ferozepur Lok Sabha constituency, 11,17,934 votes with 6,100 as NOTA votes were polled.
With the outcome of surprising results, understanding the specific reasons for poor electoral performance in a constituency like Ferozepur requires an in-depth analysis of local dynamics, historical voting patterns, and current socio-political context.
Ghubaya, the winning Congress candidate, got a poor response in Ferozepur Rural, Abohar and Muktsar Assembly Constituencies (ACs) getting 2,66,626 votes highest of all the other three major political parties. Rana Sodhi, the BJP candidate, was poor in three ACs of Ferozepur Rural, Jalalabad and Guruharsahai with a margin of 11529 votes. Kaka Bara, AAP Candidate, who is MLA from Muktsar got handsome votes in his constituency but could not get support from 5 segments of Ferozepur City and lost by one narrow margin of 3,242 votes only, Fazilka, Balluana, Abohar and Gurharsahai. Vardev Singh Bobby Mann SAD candidate, who lost with a margin of 12981 votes got low votes in Ferozepur City and Fazilka ACs.
The poor response to major political parties, with the winning of Congress candidate can be attributed to several factors. Among the major ones is – the voters may feel that these parties have not adequately addressed local issues. The incumbent performance could be another reason. If the sitting MLA or MP from these parties did not perform up to expectations, it could result in voter disillusionment. There could also be internal party dynamics as divided parties struggle to try to present a united front to voters but might have failed. Strong competition from other parties especially the Congress could be another factor of poor response. Of course, the campaign strategy does work but this time the period for campaigning was short due to the non-announcement of candidates as successful campaigns typically require a deep understanding of local issues and effective communication of solutions. Last but not least, besides social and economic factors, the lofty promises during the previous elections might have compelled them to turn to other options.
Sources said, the losing candidates have closely started brainstorming the surprising results, perhaps to make a new strategy in the next Assembly and Lok Sabha elections but it is a long time to say now what the position would be non-announcement at that time.
