PAU trains rural women in food preservation and digital awareness

Ludhiana (Punjab), February 3, 2025: The Department of Extension Education and Communication Management (EECM), under the guidance of Dr Kiran Bains, Dean, College of Community Science, Punjab Agricultural University (PAU), organized a two-day training course on “Food Preservation and Digital Awareness” for the village women.
Nearly 40 women participated in this initiative, aimed to equip them with practical skills in food preservation and digital awareness, contributing to their self-sufficiency and improved household management.
The course was held as a part of the Rural Agricultural Work Experience (RAWE) program.The training course focused on food preservation techniques to help rural women extend the shelf life of fruits and vegetables.
Students delivered a lecture on preservation methods and presented a chart outlining different preservatives for easy understanding.
Demonstrations on apple cinnamon jam, amla chutney, lemon squash and tomato sauce were conducted, where students actively involved the participants in the preparation process. Pamphlets of recipes were also distributed. The prepared recipes were later offered for tasting, ensuring an interactive and hands-on learning experience.
Additionally, a lecture on digital addiction, child right and protection acts were delivered, supported by informative charts. The training course also covered solar drying techniques, where students practically demonstrated the solar drying of spinach and fenugreek leaves using solar dryer.
The course was supervised by Dr Preeti Sharma and Dr Sukhdeep Kaur, Assistant Professors, Department of EECM. Later, university literature on preservation of fruits and vegetables was distributed to all the participants.
