31 mobiles seized in Ferozepur Jail: Frequent mobile recoveries raise serious security concerns
Ferozepur, February 16, 2025: In yet another breach of security, a search operation at Ferozepur Central Jail led to the recovery of 31 mobile phones and 14 sachets of 'zarda' tobacco, allegedly thrown over the high walls by unidentified individuals. This marks the second such recovery in February, raising serious questions about the effectiveness of the jail’s security measures.
This is not an isolated incident. Just a few days earlier, on February 11, authorities seized six mobiles, 945 drug capsules, 10 chargers, three adapters, and 16 sachets of tobacco from five inmates. The issue extends beyond this month—116 mobile phones were recovered in January alone, and a staggering 510 mobiles were confiscated throughout the past year.
Despite a three-layer security system, jail authorities have remained tight-lipped about the frequent recoveries. Mobile phones are the most sought-after contraband in prisons, allowing inmates to stay in contact with the outside world, including for illicit activities.
To curb this growing menace, authorities must adopt stricter measures, such as: Enhanced surveillance on the jail’s backside, particularly in open areas vulnerable to contraband being thrown over the walls. Monitoring of rising residential buildings adjacent to the prison, which could be facilitating smuggling attempts and stricter penalties for inmates caught with banned items, including restrictions on visitations and parole.
Unless immediate action is taken, these persistent security lapses will continue to undermine the very purpose of incarceration, turning the prison into a hub of unchecked illegal activities.
