New Delhi, March 21, 2025 – Union Home Minister Amit Shah, addressing the Rajya Sabha on Friday, asserted that the government successfully neutralized the threat posed by MP Amritpal Singh, stating that the self-styled extremist leader is now "peacefully reciting Guru Granth Sahib in Assam jail."
"Some people tried to become Bhindranwale in Punjab... We did not have the government (in the state), but the Home Ministry’s firm resolve ensured that he is in Assam jail," Shah said, emphasizing the zero-tolerance policy against extremism.

Amritpal Singh, leader of the Waris Punjab De outfit, was arrested by Punjab Police on April 23, 2023, from Rode village in Moga district. His arrest concluded a 37-day manhunt that began on March 18, 2023, following a crackdown on him and his supporters.
Singh was accused of several offenses, including leading an armed storming of the Ajnala Police Station near Amritsar in February 2023, demanding the release of an aide. The violent incident resulted in injuries to police personnel.
The government invoked the National Security Act (NSA) against him, enabling his preventive detention for up to 12 months. Singh was transferred to Dibrugarh Central Jail, Assam, where several of his aides were also held under the NSA.
