Amritsar (Punjab), April 20, 2025: Jathedar of Akal Takht Sahib, Giani Kuldeep Singh Gargaj, has strongly criticized the Punjab Government’s decision to extend the detention of Khadoor Sahib MP Amritpal Singh under the National Security Act (NSA) for another year.
He called the move a misuse of legal provisions and a serious violation of democratic and human rights.
“If an elected representative can be treated this way, what hope is there for ordinary citizens?” Jathedar Gargajj asked during a statement issued from the Akal Takht Secretariat.
The comments came following a meeting between Jathedar Gargajj and Amritpal Singh’s uncle, Sukhchain Singh, alongside other community leaders. The Jathedar urged both the Punjab and Central governments to respect public sentiment and immediately withdraw the NSA action against the MP.
He further criticized the double standards of the government, noting that while there is little urgency in addressing the desecration of Sri Guru Granth Sahib, laws like the NSA are swiftly used to suppress Sikhs and extend detentions without justification.
He concluded by warning that recent internal conflicts have weakened Sikh unity, giving space for anti-Panthic forces to exploit the situation.
