New Delhi, April 26, 2025: The Ministry of Information and Broadcasting has issued an advisory to all media platforms, news agencies, and social media users, directing them to refrain from live coverage and real-time reporting of defense operations and the movement of security forces, citing concerns over national security.
The advisory stresses that all reporting must strictly adhere to existing laws and regulations.
It prohibits real-time coverage, dissemination of visuals, and "sources-based" reporting related to defense activities to prevent any inadvertent assistance to hostile elements and ensure the safety of personnel.
Citing past incidents like the Kargil War, the 26/11 Mumbai attacks, and the Kandahar hijacking, the ministry underlined how unrestricted media coverage in sensitive situations has adversely impacted national interests in the past.
The ministry reminded that Rule 6(1)(p) of the Cable Television Networks (Amendment) Rules, 2021, already bars live coverage of anti-terrorist operations, allowing only periodic official briefings. Any violation could invite legal action.
Media platforms, digital platforms, and individuals have been urged to uphold vigilance, sensitivity, and responsibility in their reporting to protect ongoing operations and national security.
