Chandigarh, May 12, 2025 – In a fresh development in the ongoing water dispute, the Punjab Government has filed a review petition in the High Court challenging the May 6 order related to water release by the Bhakra Beas Management Board (BBMB).
The government, in its petition, has alleged that BBMB is illegally releasing water from the Nangal Dam, and has further accused the board of misleading the court on key facts concerning the matter.
The legal move comes amid continued protests led by Punjab Education Minister Harjot Bains, where Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) workers have been staging a dharna (sit-in protest) against BBMB at the Nangal Dam site.
The Punjab Government contends that BBMB’s actions are in violation of legal and procedural norms, and that the board has failed to consult the state before executing water releases.
The review petition aims to reverse or revise the court’s earlier ruling, as the state intensifies its legal and political battle over water rights and the management of river resources.
Officials stated that the state is committed to safeguarding Punjab’s share of water and ensuring that no agency bypasses legal channels in matters of such critical public interest.
