BBMB allocates 10,300 cusecs of water to Haryana under new quota: Shruti Choudhry
Chandigarh, May 22, 2025: The Bhakra Beas Management Board (BBMB) has allocated 10,300 cusecs of water to Haryana, according to Irrigation and Water Resources Minister Shruti Choudhry.
The allocation was decided during a BBMB technical committee meeting held on May 15. Haryana submitted a demand letter on May 19 to the Executive Engineer of BML Patiala, requesting the release of water at two key contact points: 3,600 cusecs at RD 160000 of the Narwana Branch and 6,700 cusecs at RD 390000 of the BML (Bhakra Main Line). The Executive Engineer forwarded the request to BBMB, which began increasing water flow through the Nangal Hydel Channel from Lohand on May 21 at 1:35 PM, in line with the operations manual.
Minister Choudhry explained that of the total 10,300 cusecs reaching Haryana, 3,600 cusecs will be supplied via the Narwana Branch to meet the irrigation and drinking water needs of Jind, Bhiwani, Rohtak, Jhajjar, and southern Haryana districts through the WJC system.
The remaining 6,700 cusecs at RD 390000 of BML will be released to cater to Hisar, Sirsa, and Fatehabad districts via the Barwala Link Channel and the tail end of the BML group.
Choudhry assured that from Friday onward, Haryana will have sufficient water to meet both drinking and irrigation requirements.
The Minister also criticized Punjab Chief Minister for politicizing the water issue and emphasized that Haryana holds historical water allocation records from BBMB. She urged Punjab to respect Haryana’s rightful share of water.
In addition, Choudhry welcomed the central government’s decision to hand over dam security to the CISF, describing it as a positive measure.
