Chandigarh, May 29, 2025:
In the run-up to the Ludhiana West Assembly bye-election, the Election Commission of India (ECI) has directed the Punjab Government to submit a panel of three eligible IPS officers for the post of Commissioner of Police, Ludhiana, in case a change is deemed necessary.
The communication was issued via a letter from the Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) of Punjab to the Additional Secretary, Department of Home Affairs and Justice, seeking names of senior and eligible officers who meet the required norms and are free from any disciplinary or vigilance inquiries.
However, amidst speculation, the Office of the CEO Punjab has issued a clarification, stating that this is a routine administrative procedure undertaken before every election.
“Ahead of each election, the CEO’s office seeks an advance panel of officers from the State Government. This is done purely as a preparatory measure, should the Election Commission of India require any changes in administration,” the clarification stated.
It was further clarified that no recommendation or decision has been made to replace the current Commissioner of Police in Ludhiana. The move is simply to ensure administrative preparedness in case of any future requirements.
The CEO’s office also urged media outlets to avoid speculation and to confirm any such developments through official sources before reporting.
This development remains a standard step in ensuring free and fair elections, reinforcing the ECI’s commitment to maintaining impartiality and readiness during the electoral process.
