Big Boost for Punjab: Modi Govt clears major Thermal Power project

Chandigarh, June 7, 2025: In a major push for energy infrastructure in Punjab, the Central Government has approved a landmark power project for Rupnagar (Ropar). Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Power Minister Manohar Lal Khattar have given the green signal for the installation of two new 800 MW thermal power units at the Rupnagar Thermal Power Plant, adding a total of 1,600 MW to the state’s power generation capacity.
With this, Punjab and North India are expected to benefit from an overall increase of 2,400 MW in electricity production, helping to stabilize power supply across the region.
BJP District Chief Welcomes the Move
Ajayveer Singh Lalpura, District President of the BJP in Rupnagar, expressed gratitude towards PM Modi and Minister Khattar for the historic approval. “This decision will strengthen the power balance not just in Punjab but across northern India,” he said.
Rupnagar to Emerge as Energy Hub
Calling it a visionary move by Prime Minister Modi, Lalpura said, “Rupnagar is on track to become a major hub for power generation in North India. The project will not only boost electricity production but also open up new employment opportunities in the region.”
Infrastructure Upgrades and Industrial Growth
To ensure uninterrupted fuel supply, the coal supply radius for the plant has been increased from 1,000 km to 1,500 km.This logistical improvement, coupled with new capacity additions, is expected to stimulate industrial development in the area.
Local Economy to Benefit
The project is anticipated to generate new jobs for the youth and provide a significant boost to the local economy of Rupnagar.
Lalpura concluded by saying, “This is a proud moment for Rupnagar. I sincerely thank Prime Minister Modi and Power Minister Khattar for this transformative gift to Punjab.”
