Modi Govt's Gift to Rupnagar: Approval granted for two new 800 MW power units

Rupnagar (Punjab), June 7, 2025: Bharatiya Janata Party's District President Ajayveer Singh Lalpura has issued a press statement, expressing heartfelt gratitude to Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Power Minister Manohar Lal Khattar.
He stated that this historic decision by the Modi government regarding the Rupnagar Thermal Plant will cater to the energy needs of not only Punjab but the entire northern region of India.
Lalpura shared that Union Minister Shri Manohar Lal Khattar has approved the installation of two new 800 MW power units at the Rupnagar Thermal Plant, adding a total new generation capacity of 1,600 megawatts.
Additionally, a total of 2,400 MW of extra electricity generation projects for Punjab have received the green light.This project will provide affordable and uninterrupted power to millions and will strengthen Punjab’s energy self-reliance, giving a new direction to industrial development.
He also informed that the maximum limit for coal supply distance has been increased from 1,000 kilometers to over 1,500 kilometers, ensuring a smooth fuel supply.
Ajayveer Singh Lalpura said, “This decision is a result of Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi’s visionary leadership and Power Minister Shri Manohar Lal Khattar’s commitment. With this historic initiative, Rupnagar will soon become the main energy hub of North India. This is not just an expansion of a thermal plant but the beginning of a new chapter in Rupnagar's development.”
He further added that the project will not only solve power shortages but also create employment opportunities for the youth and boost the local economy.
Commenting on the development of Rupnagar, he said, “With Modi Ji, everything is possible. This gift is a matter of pride for Rupnagar, and I sincerely thank Prime Minister Modi Ji and Power Minister Khattar Ji for it.
