PSEB Engineers welcome 3 new supercritical power units to in Punjab

Patiala (Punjab), June 7, 2025: The PSEB Engineers Association has welcomed the decision to establish three 800 MW supercritical thermal power units in Punjab, calling it a much-needed move to address the state’s rising energy demands and ensure power self-sufficiency.
In a statement released on Saturday, the association said that setting up two of these units at the Ropar Thermal Power Plant site was a strategically sound choice, as the site already possesses the essential infrastructure for large-scale power generation.
The engineers reiterated their long-standing demand that all future power projects in Punjab should be executed under the state sector to ensure transparency and cost-efficiency. “Privatized power generation has often led to scandals and increased the cost burden on the common man,” the association said.
Power demand in Punjab has been rising steadily due to changing climate patterns and growing economic activity. Experts estimate an annual growth rate of 7%, which could push the demand up by 4,000 MW in the coming years. The addition of 2,400 MW through these three thermal units is expected to significantly reduce the state’s dependence on external sources and enhance grid stability.
V.K. Gupta, a retired PSPCL engineer, highlighted that Punjab faced a power shortage of around 900 MW during the peak paddy season last year, when unrestricted demand hit 16,900 MW.He warned that the state’s demand is likely to cross 20,000 MW within the next four to five years.
Gupta emphasized that addressing Punjab’s power deficit requires timely capacity additions through both thermal and renewable energy sources. “The installation of these supercritical units, alongside expansion in solar power, is essential for securing Punjab’s energy future,” he said.
