Strict ban on unhygienic food, drinks in Gurdaspur to prevent outbreak of cholera, waterborne diseases

Gurdaspur (Punjab), June 13, 2025 – In a significant move to curb the spread of cholera and other waterborne diseases, the Additional District Magistrate (ADM) of Gurdaspur has issued strict directives banning the sale of uncovered and unhygienic food items across the district.
The orders have come into immediate effect and will remain in force until December 31, 2025.
Ban on Sale of the Following Items:
- Food items sold without proper covering such as wire mesh or glass
- Overripe, raw, decayed, or cut fruits
- Sweets, meat, cakes, biscuits, bread, roasted grains, and similar items if not sold in a hygienic and covered manner
- Water-based beverages like sugarcane juice, lassi, and sherbet if not prepared in clean conditions
- Ice, mineral water, and bottled carbonated drinks from factories that haven't received water quality certification from Punjab’s Public Health Laboratory
Monitoring and Enforcement:
Officials including SMOs, SMIs, and food safety officers have been directed to inspect food production, sale, and distribution units throughout the district.Authorities at medical checkpoints have also been empowered to check vehicles and screen suspicious passengers for health risks.
Violators Face Legal Action:
The ADM has warned that any violations will lead to strict legal action. The public has been urged to consume only hygienically prepared food and beverages to avoid health hazards during the monsoon season.
