Punjab ramps up horticulture push to boost farmers' income and crop diversity

Chandigarh, July 2, 2025: The Punjab Government, under the leadership of Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann, is accelerating its efforts to transform the state’s agricultural landscape by promoting horticulture and crop diversification as key pillars of economic growth and farmer prosperity.
In a focused review meeting held at the Punjab Civil Secretariat, Horticulture Minister Mohinder Bhagat met with senior officials to assess the progress of various horticulture initiatives.
The meeting highlighted the state’s ongoing commitment to enhancing farmers’ income by shifting from traditional crops to high-value horticultural produce.Director of Horticulture, Shailender Kaur, briefed the minister on a range of projects currently being implemented across Punjab.
These include schemes to improve crop productivity, adoption of modern agri-technologies, and efforts to strengthen market linkages for fruits, vegetables, and floriculture. Minister Bhagat stressed the importance of keeping farmers informed and empowered.
He instructed the department to ramp up training programs, awareness camps, and digital outreach to ensure that farmers are well-versed in the latest techniques and government support schemes.
“Timely and accessible information is the key to enabling farmers to make informed choices and maximize benefits,” he said.
With Punjab aiming to diversify its agriculture and reduce overdependence on wheat and paddy, the horticulture sector is emerging as a game-changer.
The government’s renewed focus on this area is expected to bring economic resilience, environmental sustainability, and better livelihoods for farming communities across the state.
