IPS officer Kuldeep Chahal takes charge as DIG Range Patiala

Patiala (Punjab), July 16, 2025: IPS Kuldeep Chahal has taken charge as DIG Patiala.He is a 2009 batch IPS officer of Punjab Cadre.
In 2012, as a young officer, Chahal was also one of the lead role in the police team in Shera Khubhan encounter in Bathinda.
In 2014, while serving as SP in Abohar, he arrested notorious gangster Lawrence Bishnoi, a pivotal achievement in curbing criminal networks. His tenure in Mohali included successful operations targeting Bishnoi’s associate Ankit Bhaddu and criminal Sunil Masih. For his bravery and service, Chahal was honored with the Police Medal for Gallantry (PMG) and the Director General’s Commendation Disc in 2018.
Having served as Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) in Mohali, Tarn Taran, Muktsar Sahib, and Chandigarh (October 2020–December 2022), Chahal’s Chandigarh stint was notably abbreviated due to administrative reshuffling. He later held the position of Commissioner of Police in Jalandhar (pre-November 2023) and Ludhiana (November 2023), where he focused on crime prevention and community policing.He also remain controversial during his stint as SSp Chandigarh and also faced CBI probe in a case related to some businessman.
As DIG Patiala Range, Chahal, he aims to enhance crime monitoring and strengthen community-police partnerships to maintain law and order across Patiala, Sangrur, Barnala, and Malerkotla districts.
Born in 1981 in Ujhana village, Jind district, Haryana, Chahal hails from a farmer’s family. He holds a B.A. from Kurukshetra University and an M.A. in History from Panjab University, Chandigarh. Starting his career as an Assistant Sub-Inspector (ASI) with the Chandigarh Police in 2005, Chahal’s determination led him to clear the UPSC examination, securing an impressive 82nd rank to join the IPS in 2009.
Beyond his professional achievements, Chahal remains deeply connected to his roots, supporting environmental and sports initiatives in Ujhana through his non-governmental organization.
