Lives at Stake: DC imposes strict, time-bound orders to check fog accidents
Babushahi Bureau
Ludhiana (Punjab), December 30, 2025: In a decisive move to prevent road accidents during the foggy season, Deputy Commissioner Himanshu Jain on Tuesday issued strict and time-bound directions to multiple departments and executive agencies, warning of zero tolerance for any lapse that could endanger public lives.
Chairing the District Road Safety Committee meeting, DC Jain ordered the immediate installation of cat’s eyes, reflectors and blinkers on an emergency basis across high-risk road stretches, dividers, canal-side roads and sharp turns.
He directed that all such safety measures must be completed within five days without exception, stating that these installations are critical for guiding motorists in low-visibility conditions.
To prevent rear-end collisions involving heavy vehicles during fog, the DC instructed the General Manager of the District Industries Centre and officials from GST and Excise departments to ensure that all industrial units, business establishments and companies install retro-reflective yellow tapes on their commercial vehicles.
Roadways and PRTC officials were directed to ensure compliance on all buses, while the Departments of Cooperatives and Agriculture were specifically tasked with enforcing the directive on tractor-trolleys, with no leniency permitted.
Focusing on accident-prone areas, including the Ladowal Bypass and the stretch from Samrala Chowk to the Toll Plaza on the Jalandhar side, DC Jain directed NHAI to immediately install speed control barriers, rumble strips, blinkers, signages and view cutters to minimise the risk of mishaps.
The Deputy Commissioner also ordered intensive challaning of modified and overloaded vehicles violating the Motor Vehicles Act, terming them a grave threat to public safety. Officials were directed to submit a detailed report on challans issued and action taken by January 5, 2026.
Emphasising child safety, DC Jain directed strict checking of school buses to ensure proper implementation of the Safe School Vahan Policy. He warned that any violation of the policy would be treated seriously, as it poses a significant risk to the lives of schoolchildren.
All SDMs, the Regional Transport Authority, Traffic Police, General Managers of Roadways and PRTC, Municipal Corporation Ludhiana, PWD, Mandi Board and NHAI have been instructed to submit compliance reports by January 5, 2026. The next review meeting has been scheduled for January 6, 2026.
Issuing a clear warning, DC Jain said that any non-compliance with the orders would invite strict disciplinary action.
