Calgary (Canada), April 3, 2026: Authorities in Calgary have flagged a concerning trend in a string of extortion cases targeting members of the South Asian community, with several suspects allegedly operating under foreign direction and residing in Canada on temporary visas.
As reported by the Vancouver Sun, Calgary Police Chief Const. Katie McLellan revealed that investigators have identified a “significant number” of individuals connected to these cases. While multiple arrests have been made, officials say charges are not always immediately filed as part of a broader investigative strategy.
“We are very deliberate about when charges are laid, ensuring the evidence is thoroughly built,” McLellan said, underlining the complexity of the ongoing probe.
Investigators have uncovered two key patterns: several suspects are allegedly being guided by handlers based overseas, while many of those involved are in Canada on work or student visas.
