Chandigarh, April 21, 2026: Punjab Congress president Amarinder Singh Raja Warring has strongly objected to a proposed television series reportedly titled ‘Lawrence of Punjab’, warning that it risks glorifying gangster culture and maligning the state’s identity.
Raising serious concerns, Warring said associating Punjab with a gangster like Lawrence Bishnoi undermines the image of the state, which he described as the sacred land of Gurus, saints and spiritual traditions. He cautioned that such portrayals could send a dangerous message, particularly to the youth.
The Congress leader alleged that the series would promote crime and violence by projecting a criminal figure in a glorified manner.
Referring to past incidents, he said Bishnoi and his associates have been linked to several violent crimes, including the killing of Punjabi singer Sidhu Moosewala.
Demanding an immediate ban on the show, Warring questioned the intent of the creators and termed the project as irresponsible. “This is not merely entertainment but could influence young minds in the wrong direction,” he said.
He also criticised both the Centre and the state government for remaining silent on the issue, calling it a matter that affects Punjab’s image and social fabric.
Warring further stated that he would move the Punjab and Haryana High Court by filing a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) to seek legal intervention against the airing of the series.
Highlighting Bishnoi’s background, he added that the gangster has no direct connection to Punjab, noting that he hails from Rajasthan and is currently lodged in Sabarmati Jail in Gujarat.
