AAP Women’s Wing leader alleges harassment, threatens to quit post

Tarn Taran (Punjab), May 17, 2026: A political controversy has erupted in Punjab’s Tarn Taran district after Rajbir Kaur, the women’s wing president of the Aam Aadmi Party from the Khemkaran constituency, alleged harassment and inaction by local police following a dispute in her village.
Addressing the media, Rajbir Kaur claimed she was abused and insulted by a villager after she asked him to slow down his speeding vehicle while children were passing through the street in Sur Singh village under the Khemkaran Assembly segment of Tarn Taran district.
According to Rajbir Kaur, the incident took place on May 6 when she was walking in her street and noticed schoolchildren nearby. She alleged that a villager, identified as Manjot Singh Jota, was driving at high speed through the area.
“I only requested him to drive slowly because children were passing ahead. Instead, he got out of the vehicle, abused me and behaved aggressively,” she alleged.
Rajbir Kaur further claimed that CCTV footage of the incident exists and has already been submitted to the Sur Singh police post along with her complaint. However, she accused the police of failing to take action against the accused.
She alleged that instead of registering a case, police officials pressured her to withdraw the complaint and warned that a case could instead be registered against her and her son.
Expressing disappointment, the AAP leader said party workers were not being heard even under their own government. She announced that she was stepping down from her position in protest.
“There is no hearing for workers in the Aam Aadmi Party government. I am leaving my post from today,” she said.
Rajbir Kaur has appealed to the Tarn Taran SSP and the Punjab DGP to ensure legal action and provide justice in the matter.
Meanwhile, Dilbagh Singh Daraj, state general secretary of the Bharatiya Kisan Union Ekta Sangharsh, extended support to Rajbir Kaur and announced a large protest outside the SSP office on May 19 demanding action.
On the other hand, the accused side denied all allegations. Speaking to the media, Manjot Singh Jota’s brothers, Sandeep Singh and Navjot Singh, claimed the accusations were false and alleged that Rajbir Kaur was trying to implicate the family due to an old personal dispute.
When contacted regarding the matter, KP Singh, in-charge of Sur Singh police post, said the complaint submitted by Rajbir Kaur was under process and being examined according to procedure.
The CCTV footage related to the altercation has also reportedly surfaced, adding further attention to the dispute.
